Former President Abraham Lincoln traveled to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, during the Civil War in 1863 to give one of the most famous speeches in U.S. history. He urged Pennsylvanians to dedicate themselves to the preservation of “government of the people, by the people, and for the people.” U.S. history shows a constant struggle to put the people’s interest ahead of special interests on political, social, and economic matters.
The above statement has always made me realize just how powerful and influential government and politics are, due to the fact that there are very few places untouched by political influence. Through witnessing events such as September 11th, I have come to believe that these two areas are far too significant to overlook.
